I mounted the fidgety two year old with no difficulty - my long time girlfriend Marissa Star, who had finished her rides for the morning, did a good job of holding the colt's attention with a sugar lump for the few moments it took to get up and onto the powerful bay's back. Thanks. I grinned at her. She returned the smile and unclipped King's lead, leaving me to handle the thoroughbred from his back. It was unnecessary to drive the colt forward - he was already bounding onto the dirt in the blink of an eye.
I guided him through warm up figures briefly. King didn't need much of a warm up as he had already been trotting on the spot for the past fifteen minutes. Then I urged him to canter around the outer edge, doing my utmost to keep him in canter and going in a straight line. The exciteable colt was evidently determined to run as soon as possible, judging by his behaviour. Rather than grow calmer and easier to ride with each passing training session, King was growing more unruly and much, much more of a powerful ride.
After a short two furlong canter, I saw James give me the thumbs up - our gallop signal. I hunkered down a little lower, staying perfectly in sync with the horse as I urged him to gallop. King surged into the faster pace so suddenly, I came close to losing my balance.
Phwoar! Look at him go! Marissa exclaimed, watching excitedly as Here's The King tore around the final turn and thundered into the stretch. You could actually see his acceleration - he really dug in and pushed himself to his absolute limits. Speed is nothing if you can't control it. James said through his teeth as they watched Here's The King rush headlong down the track like there was no tomorrow. Davo needs to figure out how to keep a better hold on that colt. I don't want to see either get hurt. Sarah commented.
I urged the colt faster and faster, feeling the exhilaration of his sheer speed take my breath away. We flashed under the wire in a blur.
Wow.. I managed to say, as I touched my feet on the ground. I swear this horse gets marginally faster by the day.
